How is advertising ROI different from ROAS?
ROAS only divides revenue by ad spend. Advertising ROI is more comprehensive: it subtracts all advertising-related costs (ad spend, agency fees, creative production, technology) from the gross profit generated, then divides by total investment. This gives a true picture of profitability. A campaign with a 5x ROAS might still have a negative ROI if agency fees and creative costs are high.
Include all costs directly attributable to running the campaign: media spend (the actual ad budget), agency or in-house management fees, creative and content production costs, landing page development, marketing technology costs (attribution tools, bid management platforms), and any promotional costs (discounts offered to ad-acquired customers).
B2B revenue attribution is complex because of long sales cycles and multiple touchpoints. Common approaches include: first-touch attribution (credit the first ad that introduced the prospect); last-touch attribution (credit the final ad before conversion); linear attribution (split credit equally across all touchpoints); and time-decay attribution (give more credit to recent touchpoints). Multi-touch attribution models provide the most accurate picture but require sophisticated tracking.
