What is CPM in digital advertising?
CPM stands for Cost Per Mille (mille = thousand in Latin). It represents the cost an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions. CPM is the standard pricing model for brand awareness campaigns on display networks, YouTube, LinkedIn, and programmatic platforms. A lower CPM means you are reaching more people for less money, though reach quality also matters.
B2B CPMs are typically higher than B2C due to the precision of targeting. LinkedIn CPMs range from $30–$80 for targeted B2B audiences. Google Display Network CPMs average $2–$5. Programmatic B2B display typically runs $8–$20. The “right” CPM depends on the quality of the audience — a $60 CPM reaching CFOs at your target accounts may deliver far better ROI than a $5 CPM reaching a broad audience.
Use CPM optimisation for brand awareness campaigns where reach and frequency are the primary goals. Use CPC (cost per click) for traffic-driving campaigns. Use CPA (cost per acquisition) for conversion-focused campaigns where you have enough data for the algorithm to optimise. In B2B, most campaigns should ultimately be evaluated on pipeline and revenue contribution, regardless of the bidding strategy used.
CPM, reach, and frequency are interconnected: Total Cost = (CPM × Impressions) ÷ 1,000. Frequency = Impressions ÷ Reach. For B2B brand building, a frequency of 3–7 exposures per target account per month is typically recommended to build meaningful awareness without causing ad fatigue.
