What is pipeline velocity?
Pipeline velocity measures the rate at which opportunities move through your sales pipeline and convert to revenue. The formula is: (Number of Opportunities × Average Deal Size × Win Rate) ÷ Sales Cycle Length. The result tells you how much revenue your pipeline generates per day, making it easy to compare performance across time periods or teams.
There are four levers: (1) Increase the number of qualified opportunities through better demand generation and ABM; (2) Increase average deal size through upselling and targeting larger accounts; (3) Improve win rate through better sales enablement, competitive intelligence, and proposal quality; (4) Shorten the sales cycle through faster qualification, executive access, and streamlined procurement processes.
Pipeline velocity benchmarks vary widely by industry and deal size. Rather than comparing to external benchmarks, track your own velocity over time. A 10–20% quarter-over-quarter improvement in pipeline velocity is a strong indicator of a healthy, improving go-to-market motion.
ABM typically improves pipeline velocity on three of the four dimensions: it increases average deal size (by targeting larger accounts), improves win rate (through personalisation and relationship depth), and can shorten sales cycles (because target accounts are pre-warmed before sales engagement). This is why ABM programs consistently show strong pipeline velocity improvements.
