What is a URL slug?
A URL slug is the part of a URL that comes after the domain name and identifies a specific page. For example, in “https://thesmarketers.com/blog/abm-strategy”, the slug is “abm-strategy”. Good slugs are short, descriptive, lowercase, use hyphens to separate words, and include the primary keyword for the page.
URL slugs are a minor but real SEO ranking factor. Google uses the URL to understand page content, so including your primary keyword in the slug provides a relevance signal. More importantly, clean, readable URLs improve CTR in search results and are more likely to be shared and linked to. Avoid using dates, numbers, or stop words (the, a, an, of) in slugs unless they are essential to meaning.
Always use hyphens, never underscores. Google treats hyphens as word separators, so “abm-strategy” is read as two separate words. Underscores are treated as word connectors, so “abm_strategy” is read as a single word “abmstrategy”. This distinction matters for keyword matching in search results.
Keep slugs as short as possible while remaining descriptive. Remove stop words (the, a, an, for, in, of, to) and focus on the core keywords. For example, “how-to-build-abm-strategy” is better than “how-to-build-a-winning-account-based-marketing-strategy-in-2025”. Shorter URLs are easier to remember, share, and display in search results without truncation.
