What is Lead Velocity Rate (LVR)?
LVR measures the month-over-month percentage growth in qualified leads. Formula: LVR = ((Current Month Leads − Previous Month Leads) ÷ Previous Month Leads) × 100. It was popularised by David Skok and Jason Lemkin as a leading indicator of future revenue growth. Because qualified leads typically convert to revenue 3–6 months later, a growing LVR today predicts growing ARR in the future.
MRR is a lagging indicator — it reflects decisions made months ago. LVR is a leading indicator — it reflects the health of your pipeline today. A company with flat MRR but a 20% monthly LVR is likely to see strong MRR growth in 3–6 months. Conversely, a company with strong MRR but declining LVR should be concerned about future growth. LVR gives you time to course-correct before revenue is impacted.
A consistent monthly LVR of 10–20% is considered strong for growth-stage SaaS companies. This implies roughly doubling your qualified lead volume every 4–7 months. For companies targeting 3x annual ARR growth, you typically need an LVR of 10%+ per month. The key is consistency — a steady 10% monthly LVR is more valuable than volatile swings between 30% and -10%.
LVR improvement requires a systematic approach to demand generation: increase top-of-funnel traffic through SEO, content marketing, and paid media; improve conversion rates at each funnel stage; expand into new channels or markets; and invest in ABM to create demand among high-value target accounts. Track LVR by channel to identify which sources are growing fastest and deserve more investment.
